What is Canada Dependent Visa?

Sponsor your spouse/common-law partner and dependent children by using the Canada dependent visa. Immigrants can sponsor the dependent visa if they are able to manage the dependents financially and if they do not need any assistance or policies from the Government. Under this program, immigrants can bring their spouse/dependent partner, children, parents, and grandparents to Canada.

To whom you can sponsor under Canada Dependent Visa

  • Your spouse or common-law partner or conjugal partner
  • Dependent children under the age of 21
  • Dependent parents or grandparents
  • A child you adopted outside Canada while you held Canadian citizenship or PR
  • Your brother, sister, niece, nephew, uncle, aunt, or other close relatives

Dependent visa holders are allowed to live, study, and work in Canada. Your spouse/conjugal partner is eligible to get a work permit in Canada.

Canada Dependent Visa – Required documents

Eligibility to sponsor Canada-dependent visa

  • You must be over the age of 18 to participate.
  • You must be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of the country.
  • Except in the case of a disability, you should not be taking government aid.
  • If you are living in Quebec, you need to meet the eligibility requirements to sponsor a dependent visa.
  • You must be in the low-income threshold.
  • You and your spouse must be married legally.
  • You need to have a genuine relationship with your dependents.

Bring dependent children to Canada with Child Visa

To sponsor dependent children to Canada, a child visa is required.

  • The child adopted outside Canada when the sponsor was a Canadian citizen or permanent resident living in the country
  • Child that they intend to adopt in Canada
  • Sponsor’s brother or sister, nephew or niece, grandson or granddaughter if they are an orphan and meet the eligibility criteria

Eligibility for child visa:

  • A child who is being sponsored under the dependent visa must be under 22 years who does not have a spouse, or a common law or conjugal partner.
  • The dependent child must be the biological child or the adopted child of the sponsor.
  • The child must prove he is dependent on the sponsor/parent for his financial needs.
  • Dependent children who are not able to support themselves due to a physical or mental condition have no age limit for seeking sponsorship.
  • The sponsor must submit proof of his relationship with the dependent children.
  • The children who are being sponsored must undergo a medical examination and also submit proof that they have no criminal cases pending against them.
  • The medical examination must be done by a physician who is approved by the Canadian government.

Requirements to sponsor a dependent

A sponsor must have sufficient financial funds to sponsor the dependents in Canada. The sponsors must submit proof of their income for the past 12 months to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC). The IRCC authorities analyze whether the sponsor is financially strong enough to manage the dependent spouse, children, or family members.

  • Check the application package on the IRCC website.
  • Fill up the application form of the sponsor and dependent.
  • Pay the required application fee online.
  • Submit the application form.

Canada-dependent visa processing may take 2 weeks to 12 months. Make sure to submit all the accurate documents to the IRCC to get your visa processed faster.

  • The primary applicant is CAD 850.
  • The secondary applicant or common-law partner is CAD 850.
  • For Children under 22, CAD 230 per child.
